20 Nov Special Irrigation for Watering Trees
We don’t need to tell you how irrigation can help gardens thrive. You all know already that any plant which receives exactly the right amount of water, at the right frequency, will do better than one which gets watered haphazardly. Bearing that in mind, are you also aware that plants like to be watered in the right way? Beds, borders, lawns and certain individual specimens all need very different ways of watering. In this post we’re going to show you some special irrigation for watering trees and explain why they like this kind of watering.
Trees are usually larger plants with deep and spreading root systems. They therefore need a watering method that targets the roots at some depth. Our root watering system uses individual tubes that take water deeper into the soil close to the main roots of the tree. Take a look at our pictures to see how it works.
How we install tree irrigation
Our sequence of photos shows a recent installation of a root watering system in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. Our clients had 17 trees, so we installed our root watering tubes next to each one. We connect these tubes to a single water line, so that when the system switches on, each tree gets watered via this line. The water flows into the root watering tubes and down deep into the soil at the base of the tree. Of course, there has to be a controller connected to the water line, so that the system comes on at the right times and frequencies. In this case, the tree watering system has a battery-operated controller, which doesn’t require a mains electricity supply.
Before we bury the installation, we put blue ‘caution’ tape in place on the pipework. This alerts anyone digging beneath the surface that there are water pipes immediately below the tape. Hopefully it prevents accidents in the future! Once the trenches have been backfilled with earth, the only element of the system left visible is the top of the watering tube. You can see this at the base of the tree, and it allows air into the roots as well as water. However, it has a grille in place to prevent debris falling down it.
