09 Oct Shutting Down Your Irrigation System for Winter
We design Rosewood garden irrigation systems with great care. We use top-quality components, and expect our systems to last for many years. However, like everything, a little care and attention to maintenance is important. This is why we offer a maintenance contract where we visit you in autumn and again in spring. We shut down the system for the winter and start up in the spring, and check your whole system over thoroughly at the same time. This ensures you’ll get the maximum efficiency and the maximum longevity from individual parts and the system as a whole. But we think draining and shutting down your irrigation system for the winter is not just helpful, it’s vital!
Why is winterising so important?
As temperatures start to drop, the likelihood of water freezing inside the irrigation system increases. When water freezes it expands, squeezing the pipes outwards. Ultimately this will result in burst pipes. With any plumbing pipework, indoors or outside, whether it’s in your household water supply, your heating system or anything else, burst pipes are a nightmare! With your irrigation pipes, leaks at the point of the damage are less likely to cause secondary damage as they’re outside. However, replacing pipes can be costly and annoying, so it’s best to prevent this totally avoidable issue in the first place!
The other issue with the system freezing is that this can damage electrical components like timers, controllers, etc. When we shut down your system for the winter, we don’t just drain out the water. We also disconnect the electrical components and store them safely over the cold months so they stay in great condition.
Can I shut down the irrigation myself?
Of course it’s possible to perform all the relevant shut-down operations yourself. We understand that paying us to come on a regular basis twice a year might seem expensive. However, our services are great value, and if Rosewood engineers perform the shut-down, you can be sure that we’re doing it properly! We’re also happy to do the service once and show you what to do, so that you can then go on to do it yourself next time if that’s what you prefer.
